How to do the Topspin (Rolling) Swinging Volley in Pickleball?

The Topspin Swinging Volley (Rolling Volley in pickleball terms) is a move I've successfully brought from Tennis into Pickleball. This shot in tennis was popularized by Tennis legend Andre Agassi before being adopted by the current generation.

While in tennis it is fundamentally better to use punching or underspin volley's, I noticed that in pickleball you can get away with topspin volleys due to the lighter weight of the paddles. You get an offensive advantage when you use this shot at the kitchen and get into a net firefight.

  • When to use: Use this shot when the ball is at waist level or higher [00:07].

  • How to execute: Instead of hitting high to low, brush upwards on the ball for both backhand and forehand [00:21].

  • When to use it: This shot is useful in dinking battles or firefights at the net [00:42].

  • Swinging Volley: Once comfortable and if the ball is slower, you can try a more aggressive form of the swinging volley, which is usually easier on the forehand side [01:18]. This involves a slightly larger swing with a lot of wrist action, coming over the ball [01:30].
