The ATP (Around the Post) is one of the most celebrated shots in pickleball. Why? it's a difficult shot to perform that you can only pull off in certain situations. What is it? Its a point winning shot that's hit around the post on either side that land's in the court. The shot doesn't pass over the net, but around it. Some tips for pulling it off are the following:
Recognize what the ATP shot is and that it is legal and have the intention to make it when you are given the opportunity.
It's easier to do on courts with enough space on the sides so be aware of this.
It's easier to do on when your opponent hits an angled shot that gives you the angle to hit around the post.
Practice and drill it. Make sure you react quickly and use your footwork to get you in position.
Watch where your opponent is standing to defend and adjust your shot accordingly (hit low hard or over them).
Be patient. I've been waiting for months to hit my first one. I've attempted some before but some hit the post or my opponent blocked it back.
In this video I was fed a soft angled shot in the kitchen that allowed me to pull of the shot. I anticipated a popup and shot and used my footwork to get in position to make the shot and hit the 2 handed backhand around the post shot.
